Employee Practices

IFM provides direct employment to 1,215 people (FY2013: 2,454) including contractors. 469 of these employees are employed by International Ferro Metals SA (Pty) Ltd (IFMSA).

The Company aims to provide a platform for employees to work productively, develop their skills and become economically empowered in a workplace that is based on mutual respect, fairness and non-discrimination. Staff turnover for the year was 1%. 53% of employees are unionised.

The Company spent ZAR2.3 million on training and development during the year.

IFM complies fully with the labour-relations laws as set out in the South African Basic Conditions of Employment Act and the Labour Relations Act. Employment practices are in line with the tenets of human rights as enshrined in South Africa’s Constitution and Bill of Rights.

The Company has adopted a preferred procurement policy in line with the requirements of the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Act’s Codes of Good Practice. Procurement spend, to date, of goods and services from BBBEE (SMME) suppliers represents approximately 21% of total spend. These suppliers are mainly BBBEErated suppliers and where they are not rated, IFM actively engages with the supplier to obtain BBBEE rating.
